A LETTER FROM WINSTON

Letter to you, a friend whom I have yet to meet:

My university buddy msn-ed me one day and asked:   "Hey, are you the guy who's going around saying I am going to retire by 26?"   I went, erm, no.   I did retire at 26. too bad, I've grown old. I'm 28 now.

When I retired, I traveled round Europe, Asia and Australia with my family and we had a whale of a time together! .. from Paris to Tokyo!

Something sparked in me as I was sitting along the dock at Monaco. From my lounge chair, I could see Michael Schumacher's apartment on the upper slopes of Monaco. Or well.. that's what the local concierge told me.

At 26, I sat there, retired, and looking up at these huge private yachts that came with matching colour helicopters and asked myself;

Is this what I was put on this earth for?

Just to "retire"?

Sit around and waste my gift?

By standard Financial definitions, retirement or financial freedom means that you have passive income that can cover your personal expenses. But what is "personal expenses"? Every yacht parked along Monaco is worth at least $30 million dollars.

Want to guess how much it costs to maintain a month? More than a family's yearly expenses!

The next turning moment for me was in the First Class lounge at London Heathrow. I heard this gentleman complaining to his friend. Not in a vicious manner, but really earnestly upset that he would be late for his appointment.   "My new PA could not get me a private jet in time and I've to take commercial first class. They are always so late and slow. I'll miss my meeting."

As I overheard the conversation more, I realised that the gentleman wanted to rush back to his office because he had to close a deal that would give everyone in his company a bonus plus launch an amazing new product for his clients!

That set me really thinking on the flight back. What do I want to do with my life? Do I want it to be a gift to people or living in my lost world of luxury?   I decided that every minute in my life can be a gift to someone and I choose my life to be a legacy, not a warning.
